Dots and finger numbers
Blue dots show where to fret a string. 1 is the index finger, 2 the middle finger, 3 the ring finger and 4 the little finger.
Open and muted strings
O means play the open string. X means do not sound that string. The thick blue line at the top represents the nut. Higher-position shapes show the starting fret beside the chord name, such as “fret 6”; those diagrams have no thick nut line.
Degree colors for each string
Below the fretboard, each string is labeled with its degree in the chord. The same degree uses the same color, even in different octaves.
C major chord example
- String 6 (D · thickest)muted
- String 5 (G): fret 5, index finger
- String 4 (D): fret 5, index finger(barre)
- String 3 (G): fret 5, index finger(barre)
- String 2 (B): fret 5, index finger(barre)
- String 1 (D · thinnest): fret 5, index finger
Reading a barre
A blue line across strings at the same fret means a barre. Use the side of one finger to press several strings together. Start by checking that each string can sound clearly on its own.
Sharps and flats
Some notes have two equivalent names: A♯ is B♭, and F♯ is G♭. The library groups roots by sharp names and also accepts flat names in search.
